When Russia was in the habit of banishing people to Siberia in the early 19th century because they weren't so keen in Tsar Nicholas I, Irkutsk was one of the major destinations for these banished peoples. Many of these people were artists. Much of the architecture of the city is very beautiful because of these people, and this event forms much of the cultural history of the city.
